How to take care of dry skin in summer

It’s difficult to even look out the window, because the sun is so bright!

You don’t want to step out of the house, the sweltering heat is going to literally pierce through your skin.

You just want to sit in an air-conditioned room or perhaps inside a pool.

Well, that is summer for you!

But while you can see what the summer heat is doing to your mood, have you spared a thought on what it is doing to your skin?

If you have dry skin, you are bound to face even more problems during the summer months, because the heat in the atmosphere just might be ready to play absolute havoc!

Here is why dry skin care in summer needs to change

Before you can actually alter your summer skincare routine for dry skin, you need to understand what summer does to your skin, in particular dry skin. Here are some of the causes that contribute to your skin becoming overly dry and dehydrated:

  1. High temperatures - As temperatures rise during the summer months, our bodies naturally sweat to regulate the internal body temperature, but sweat can also lead to dehydration and that in turn can cause the skin to become dry and flaky.
  2. Exposure to sun - Exposure to the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays is dangerous and we all know that, but how many of us know that the UV rays can damage the skin's natural protective barrier? The effect of over exposure to sunlight can dehydrate your skin and leave it feeling tight, itchy, and dry.
  3. Air conditioning – Yes, we know how comfortable the thought of sitting inside an airconditioned room all day long is, but you have no idea how bad it is for your skin! One of the ways in which air-conditioning works is by removing moisture from the air, which leads to a decrease in humidity levels. When humidity dips, it can lead to the skin becoming dehydrated. Prolonged exposure to ACs can also cause the skin barrier to weaken, leading to an increase in transepidermal water loss (TEWL).
  4. Chlorine in pool water - Chlorine is a common disinfectant used in swimming pools; however, exposure to chlorine can also strip the skin of its natural oils, causing it to become dry and irritated.
  5. Over exfoliation - While exfoliating can help to remove dead skin cells and promote cell turnover, over-exfoliation can have the opposite effect. Too much exfoliation can damage the skin's natural protective barrier, leading to dehydration and dryness.

10 Summer skin tips that are easy to follow!

If your skin is feeling thirsty and looking dry and flaky, here are some tips and tricks for you to follow; skin care in summer for dry skin need not be too complicated. With a handful of products from indē wild and a few tweaks to your regular routine, your skin will look and feel so much better.

  1. Switch to a gentle hydrating cleanser to wash your face, because you do not want to strip away the natural oils from your skin.
  2. Invest in hydrating formulas that contain ingredients like hyaluronic acid such as our AM Sunrise Glow Serum, which can help lock in moisture.
  3. Spritz facial mists on your face and neck, throughout the day to provide instant hydration and a cooling sensation, but remember to read the ingredients and stay as chemical free as possible.
  4. Exfoliation is important, no matter the weather outside, but during the summers, you will want to switch to really mild and hydrating exfoliants and do not exfoliate more than once or twice a week.
  5. Select skincare products labeled fragrance-free to minimize potential irritation, which can exacerbate dryness. Same goes with alcohol based, paraben and sulfate products; you want to stay away from all these ingredients, because they can make your skin really dry and irritated.
  6. Warm or room temperature water is preferable for baths and face washes, because hot water will strip away the natural oils from your skin, leaving it dry and itchy. As wonderful as the cold water might feel, limit your showers to 10 minutes.
  7. As soon as you are done with your morning bath, apply a good quality serum that offers protection and hydration – something like the AM Sunrise Glow Serum, which has the goodness of ingredients such as vitamins C and E, niacinamide and hyaluronic acid.
  8. Whenever you are stepping out, make sure that you apply a mineral-based sunscreen, preferably a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher. Our AM Sunscreen Glow Drops, 12% Zinc Oxide, SPF 50+ will be a good option if you want something that leaves no white cast and is light and non-greasy on your skin.
  9. While your morning skin care routine is important, the night time one is far more crucial – use a gentle soap free cleanser to remove all traces of the day you have had and then use a hydrating and rejuvenating serum like the PM Sunset Restore Serum. The bakuchiol, squalane and tripeptides will ensure that your skin is able to repair, rejuvenate and replenish, as you sleep.
  10. One of the easiest summer skin tips to follow is to include hydration in your diet – this means plenty of water, fresh fruit juices, raw veggies and fruits and even cold soups.

During the summers, you don’t want to spend too much time indulging a long drawn skin care routine – you want simple and you want fuss free, and that is something we at indē wild understand, which is why we have kept our skincare range petite but potent! So, if you are feeling bothered by dry skin in the summer, try our skincare trio of AM-PM serums and SPF and you are all set!
